Monumental Intimacy
...But if Cassell's work has its roots in things that are seen, her art is about their transformation. Her seedpods have evolved they've developed legs, they teeter precariously on them, they become gigantic only to float as weightlessly as autumn leaves. Orchids become insects. One painting, she explains, "started out as a jellyfish, and then I just let go of the form."  As the forms are on the verge of interacting with each other, Cassell's work is on the threshold of narrative. These paintings explore the way the natural world feels to the intense and openhearted observer.
